DJ Culture: Jamie Stenhouse

Edinburgh DJ Jamie Stenhouse, known simply as Stennie, is one of the residents at tonight’s Elements Christmas Party at The Lane. His warm up set for Koen Groneveld blew the roof off clubland earlier this year, his scratch techniques and groovy tech house soundtrack marking him as one to watch.

What is this month’s floor filler?
Angy Kore’s Mekkano, the Original Mix. It’s a wee funky tech house number that never fails.

Scott Brown - Now Is The Time... on vinyl. He hee.

Favourite all time track?
I don’t really have a favourite all time track as there really are too many to pick from, but Sunlounger’s Lost is a great trance tune, I really like it... or Ramon Tapia’s Minijack. It’s a belter of a tech house number.

DJ CULTURE: DAVID RUST

DJ David Rust, plays all over Scotland. Best known for his lighting fast scratch techniques, mixed with big room bangers, his sets are energetic, loud and so driving he’d give the Stig a run for his money.

What is this month’s floor filler?
Without sounding biased, I would pick Bangerz and Masherz’ Are You Afraid, on Hard Kandy (Australia). Not only for the fact that I have a remix of the track out on the same release, but because I just love the track,
With its pounding kicks and twisted basses, the Australian duo are definitely one to look for in the future of tech-dance.

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
Hands down, I would have to say Scot Project wins. The guy is a living legend and has contributed massively to the scene over the years. He pretty much sculpted my musical preference, although German duo Kamui have been a massive inspiration for me as well.

What was your most banging gig ever in Edinburgh?
It would have to be the time in August when I played at Club Sesh, at The Lane, It was on the eve of my 23rd birthday and was a great night. I even had a chance to warm up for Hard Dance legend Phil York, which topped it off.

What was the first track you ever bought?
The first few records I acquired were terribly embarrassing. As I got them off my mate, and didn’t buy them,  I don’t need to embarrass myself by mentioning them.  When I came to my senses, though, and got into tech-trance and started buying records, the first record I bought was Fred Baker and Greg Nash’s Eclipse EP.

Favourite all time track?
There have been so many great tracks over the years. It’s a toss up between Marco V’s Indicator, Kamui‘s Electro Slut, Scot Project ‘s FM3 or Kidd Kaos’ I Am Digital. That’s the best I could do at narrowing them down.

DJ CULTURE: STU PATCHITT

What is this month’s floor filler?
It has to Matters (Aly & Fila Mix). It’s an uplifting tune that really gets the crowd’s attention. Lovely breakdown followed by a soaring, driving melody.

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
I’ve been DJing for about eight years now and what got me started was listening to the Global Underground and Trade albums. I was heavily inspired by the early hard dance scene, in particular, Tony De Vit. I never saw him live, but loved his productions. The energy in his tracks always did it for me. Still does.

What was your most banging Edinburgh gig ever?
Best gig would have to be my debut at Bassix @ The Lane back in September 2009. The crowd was brilliant and the atmosphere was electric. Definitely stands out for me.
What was the first track you ever bought?
My first purchase was HiGate’ Pitchin’ on 12inch. Loved it at the time and still think it’s not bad now.

Favourite all time track?
Hard one to answer as there are so many I could choose. Probably have to be Signum, Coming On Strong. It’s an oldie but you know it as soon as you hear it. It always goes down well wherever you are.

Stu Patchitt is resident DJ @ The Lane

DJ CULTURE: JOHN NEWALL

John Newall is one of the nu breed Trance DJs, young, enthusiastic and up for anything that can be thrown at him. Resident DJ @ Elements in the Lane, you'll find him and the trance team going head to head  in a trance vs techno showdown.

1: What is this month's floor filler? For me it has to Bryan Kearney - Mexican Rave (Original Mix), such a good track, nice and banging. Although the Neal Scarborough Remix is pretty decent taking a more trancey direction.

2: Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?I would have to say either Tiesto or Paul Van Dyk, they were a big influence on me when i was starting out as a dj in 1999 which was when the trance scene was at its best in my opinion.

3: What was your most banging gig ever?I would defintely say my most banging gig in Edinburgh was The Lane but the gallery at the famous ministry of sound in london on july 23rd this year was the biggest to date. The venue, the crowd and the music was just out of this world and to get the chance to play at that level was unbelievable. Big thanks to my good friends hassan and sid for making that possible.

4: What was the first track you ever bought (no matter how embarrassing)? My first track i ever bought was a vinyl copy of Push - Strange World which is such a great track and still to this day gives me such nice feelings and memories when i play it.

5: Favourite all time track?

My favourite track of all time has to be Binary Finary-1998,its such a powerful track and really gets a crowd going when it gets dropped.

DJ CULTURE: JASON CORTEZ

What is this week's floorfiller?
I'll blow my own trumpet here and say either a cheeky wee remix I'm working on of 30 Seconds To Mars' 100 Suns, or a new track I'm waiting to sign called sens8.

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
I've had many over the years. I loved Paul Oakenfold and Tom Wilson when I first got into dance music and clubbing. as I've grown older and more immersed in DJing and music, people like DJ Yoda, Kutski, Marco V, The Tidy Boys and Ediie Halliwell have all inspired me. Right now anyone useing new technology to play or make music is inspiring.

What was your most banging Edinburgh gig ever?
Probably one of Nuklearpuppy events I used to promote. I'm so honoured and lucky to have played in front of some great crowds in Edinburgh over the years, and I hope to play many more.

What was the first track you ever bought?
I waish I could say it was something cool, but if I remember correctly the first record I ever bought was s Scottish Football song called We Have A Dream. I remember buying it from John Menzies on Princess Street (the shop made semi famous in the chase scene at the start of the film (Trainspotting). Thinking back, it is actually a great, blood-pumping football anthem.

Favourite all time track?
If pushed to pick just one track it would probably have to be Gorecki by Lamb. It's a track that many might recognise when they hear it as I've heard it in movies, TV shows and adverts etc, but they won't know what it is or who it's by. It's simply beautiful!

Catch Jason DJ with Eddie Halliwell at City Nightclub on 27 November. You can also hear him at The Lane and various Edinburgh venues.

Friday, 12 November 2010

DJ CULTURE: DJ CUNNIE

What is this month's floor filler?
A-Trak, Ray Ban Vision.

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
If its a producer it has to be Pete Rock. For a DJ its gotta be A-trak for his all round skills.

What was your most banging Edinburgh gig?
Probably Ultragroove at cab vol. Always a party.

What was the first track you ever bought (no matter how embarrassing)?
Main Source-Breaking Atoms. Classic hip hop.

Favourite all time track?
Bobby Caldwell-What You Wont Do For Love. A blue eyed banger.

Catch DJ Cunnie play all over Edinburgh, Cab Vol, Medinda, Voodoo Rooms and more.

DJ CULTURE : JAN CREE

What is this week's floorfiller?
My big tune is Umek OMGWTF (label 1605)

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
It has to be Paul Oakenfold. He was the man during the the late 80's, through the 90's, until I eventually played on the same bill as him for Colours at the Tunnel Glasgow. What an experience that was, to be playing and standing next to my all time hero.

What was your most banging Edinburgh gig ever?
This was at the City Night Club. It was New Year's Eve 2007, again for Colour under the Hed Kandi banner alongside 2 many DJs, Darren Emerson, Eric Prydz, Jonathan Lisle and Duke Dumont.

What was the first track you ever bought?
I remember buying a 12 inch version of Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood - not having a clue about what it was all about LOL.

Favourite all time track?
Not blowing my own trumpet but Angina by Jan Cree gives me goose bumps every time I pay it. It only got released this year but hanging about the old hard drive for ages. Feedback has been great and my daughter Erin (8) loves it. She says it gives her pins and needles. Thought I was having a heart attack when i finished it. I had chest pains and my mate in the studio shouted "That's the start of Angina mate," hence the name. So if a tune has that effect on anybody, deserves to be the all time greatest tune in their bag.

Friday, 22 October 2010

DJ CULTURE: ADAM LE CHIC

What is this month's floor filler?
Jamie Lidell - I Wanna Be Your Telephone (Tiga Party Like It's 19909 Remix).

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
Fredo & Thang (Villa), Aeroplane, Erol Alkan (Disco 3000), David and Stephen
Dewaele (Soulwax).

What was your most banging Edinburgh gig?
Heavy Gossip at Medina, 16th July 2010, with Nick Yuill and Craig Smith.

What was the first track you ever bought (no
matter how embarrassing)?
D:ream - Things Can Only Get Better (not for DJing). First DJ single was Basement Jaxx, Red Alert on 12 inch.

Favourite all time track?
I've racked my brain but it is far too difficult to answer, its a toss up between Inner City's Good Life and Joe Smooth's Promised Land.

Catch Adam at various venues around the city (resident DJ @ Dare)
