GRANT PATERSON’S FLOOR FILLAZ

Floor Fillers - 17/03/11: The Clash and Futura 2000 - The Escapades Rap by The Guide Clubland
THE CLASH AND FUTURA 2000 - The Escapades Rap (Celluloid Records)
Celluloid Records have decided to re-release hip hop classics from the early 80s. Here we go back to 1982 with graffiti legend Futura and Fab Five Freddy taking a dub of The Clash. As they rap about painting the tracks sound fresher than ever. Sprayed.

Floor Fillers - 17/03/11: Phunktastike - Love Light (Molecule Recordings) by The Guide Clubland
PHUNKTASTIKE - Love Light (Molecule Recordings)

This tasty prog number has flavours of Tangerine Dream. Shinning with uplifting synths, looped patterns, groovy arp’s and disco percussion. Retro.

Floor Fillers - 17/03/11: Nachklangmusic - Cern Technologie (313 Oldschool Dub Mix) by The Guide Clubland
NACHKLANGMUSIC - Cern Technologie (313 Oldschool Dub Mix) (Nice & Nasty)
Old school 808s power the beats as this track breaks into a deep groovy bass line complete with chopped sample and percussion. It builds a la early techno stylee until the ‘All I Want To Do Is Tell You What To Do” sample (from back in the day) rides over everything, waves of Detroit swirl in its wake. Old Skool.

Floor Fillers - 17/03/11: Justin Berkovi - Flight (EevoNext Recordings) by The Guide Clubland
JUSTIN BERKOVI - Flight (Eevonext Recordings)
Deep tribal beats and one mighty melodic score will pull you in to this one. It’s the kind of track that is guaranteed to get the floor busy. Genius.

Floor Fillers - 17/03/11: Jerico - Carbon (Original Mix) by The Guide Clubland

JERICO - Carbon (Tall house Records)
Perfect Miami Winter Music Conference anthem if ever I heard one. This house sound plays warm with dreamy vocals and a sweet chiming piano. Doesn’t get much better than this. Choice.
DJ CULTURE: JIM LAMB

Jim Lamb can be heard on Leith FM’s underground electronic show, Vinyl Club, every Friday, and at techno night 10-86.

This month’s floor filler is...
George Lanham & Mr Jones – Collab #3.

Who was your DJ inspiration?
Laurent Garnier. No other DJ can mix seamlessly between techno, house and dubstep and keep the crowd with him.

My most banging Edinburgh gig ever was...
The event I put on at Cabaret Voltaire’s Speakeasy in February 2010, featuring Redshape (Live). A night for the techno purist.

The first record I ever bought was...
Interior by Drax, aka Thomas P Heckmann. After hearing Dave Angel drop this bomb at Tribal Gathering in May 1993 I made it my mission to track it down.

My favourite all time track is...
Acperience, by the one and only Hardfloor

Check out Leith FM tonight at 9pm to hear Jim and the Vinyl Club jocks mix it up with very special guest DJs.

INTERVIEW: HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR
What's been happening in the world of Hercules and Love affair?
The new album, Blue Songs, has been released on Moshi Moshi in the UK and Europe, which is very exciting. A large tour of Europe is currently happening to support the release.

So what was the trigger to form the collective?

Andy enivisioned a cast of various collaborators to help him realize his songs. The critical success of the first album made it necessary to form a touring band to support the work. For this second album nearly all of the vocal contributors are available to tour.

How did you come up with the name?
Andy derived the name from his fascination with a particular Greek myth about Hercules longing for the love of his partner who was lost on a foreign island. Hercules refused to leave the island until his 'love affair' was found.

Andy's been Djing for years in the vibrant US club scene, was Hercules the accumulation of everything he experienced as a Dj or were there other factors which influenced him in triggering the collective?
It is my understanding that Andy's interest in music began in his very early childhood when he received regular piano lessons. He has also been collecting obscure recordings from bands like Earache that he wouldn't normally play out at a gig.

He studied composition in college and so his work is a reflection of a broader musical landscape that includes, but is not limited to, djing and dance culture.

When you formed the group was it a case of everything falling into place, with the right people at the right time?
Yes, the process was very organic.

Have you known each other for a while?
I've known Andy for almost 3 years and Mark has known him about the same amount of time. He met Daniella before Hercules was fully realized in Berlin and has known Kim Ann for close to a decade. They, of course, have the most intimate and long-standing relationship.

How does the collective operate... does everyone input their own ideas or is there a clear drive to keep things in some kind of central direction?
Andy is the central creative force. He writes the song lyrics and handles a very large portion of all production.  The contribution of each collaborator varies depending on the nature of the work or song. He is up for suggestions if it works best for the song so at times it can be flexible.

If someone has been hiding in a cave for the last four years and had never heard of you... how would you describe what your music sounds like and what you are all about?
Forward-thinking reflections on music rooted in the past few decades (not just dance music) that is from and authentic place.
When in the studio, do you have a road map or is it a completely fluid process?
It depends on the day and work in question. Sometimes the track is already worked out and Andy write's lyrics to it. Other times he will sit you down at the piano and began to work out a melody or chord progression from scratch.

What's your favourite Hercules and Love Affair track and why?
That's a tough one because I honestly think they all are interesting and different. But if I had to go out on a limb I would choose 'Easy'. It's so lush and evocative. 'Answers Come In Dreams' is a close second. I find the lyrics extremely poignant and beautiful.

Electronic music has undergone somewhat of a revival and is one of the few true outlets for the freedom of expression... How do you feel about mainstream music and the domination of the major labels?
Oftentimes, this music is created in a formulaic way that does not embrace the warmth of older disco, house or techno. I would not compare a large majority of this dance music with the rooted, emotional work that you can still find in the more underground scene.

Who are your favourite artists / producers of the moment?
Personally, I think Azari & III have been releasing consistently strong singles and remixes. I think they have a bright future. Andy is very supportive of Kink and In Flagranti but I'm sure there are other artists that capture his attention, too.

What's been the biggest / best gig for you so far?
Wow, there have been quite a few. I would say that some cities that the new lineup has had the pleasure of playing on multiple occasions and have had consistently good shows and responsive audiences include Vienna, London, Milan, etc. A surprisingly good show happened in Seattle last year. The energy was through the roof!

What was the first record you bought (no matter how embarrassing)?
The first record I purchased was Dajae's "U Got Me Up" remix package.

Have you been to Scotland before, what have you heard about the Death Disco crowd?

What can we expect to hear from you when you play the fabulous Death Disco in the Arches? Banging jams from the first and second album and a few surprising cover songs.
Are you going to stay for a few days after the gig and check out Scotland?
Unfortunately, we must head out after the show.

So what have you got planned for the future? More touring.
We're excited about the summer festival season!

021: Nathan C & Danny Dove - Shift (Organic DJs Remix) [Influential House Recordings]
022: Martouf - Sorgin Jet [Cinematique]

Andreas Bergmann - Summer Dayz (Furrr & Hazendonk remix)
Apparently Manual Music’s Paul Hazendonk can do no wrong. Trust me, his remix of Summer Dayz will be popping up in clubs from now until next winter. Warm chords climb and melodic synths bubble and echo in waves. Solid.

Rusty Egan, Justus Khncke and Bottin - Atzaro (Berlin Mix)
The fantastic Dharma label bring us an uplifting 80s synth melody, which strikes the right note. The Berlin remix satisfies the house and techno heads by toughening up the original and adding some nice atmospherics. Genius.

Dominik Eulberg - Die 3 Millionen Musketiere
It’ll be two months before you’ll get your hands on this one but it’ll be worth the wait. This is a heart-warming, breakz driven melodic monster. Just beautiful, it will rip the lid off completely. Enigmatic.

MKM & GBX - The Misty
The king of beats n breakz, this is a tight break-driven stormer that can slice open heads and blow minds apart. Fully Loaded.

AGORIA - Speechless
Two great minds meet here; the amazing Agoria and Detroit techno godfather Carl Craig. The result: A timeless seductive track which has the same vibe as Lil’ Louie and The World’s French Kiss. Craig’s sexual vocal commentary is tongue in cheek, but sensually effective.
DJ CULTURE: RITCHIE BRYSON

What is this month’s floor filler?
The massive On/Off, from Cirez D.

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?
Daft Punk. There’s a shock for the people that know me. They have inspired me the last 15 years and are the main reason I become a DJ.

My most banging Edinburgh gig ever was...
Pulse 1st Birthday. The legendary Curtis Jones smashed it. Madness.

What was the first track you ever bought?
Oh god let me think... ha! It was Jackie Wilson’s Reet Petite in 1986. Classic tune, classic video.

Favourite all time track?
Easy, Daft Punk’s Rollin & Scratching. It is a timeless tune that, even today, sounds new. It is always guaranteed to blow up any dance floor.

Ritchie Bryson DJs at Noise Factory and Pulse, where he’ll be on the decks this Saturday with legendary techno producer Dusty Kid at The Cabaret Voltaire.
Cottam @ Heavy Gossip
Medina, Lothian Street, tomorrow, 10pm-3am, £5-£8, 0131-225 6313

TOMORROW sees Edinburgh club night Heavy Gossip celebrate its first birthday with the arrival of a special guest - Cottam. He’ll be joining Edinburgh house legend Craig Smith on the decks. An excited Nick Yuill, who runs the popular club night, says, "We’re delighted to be hitting our first birthday. It’s been a very quick year and a lot of fun. I’m really pleased with how the night has grown and obviously the artists we have involved but our crowd is truly where it’s at. They’re the best and ensure that the vibe remains strong."

Cottam may have shot on to the house scene in 2009, but his DJing career dates back to the mid 90s. If ever proof were needed that DJs are like a good bottle of wine - they get better with age - then look no further than Cottam. Originally from a hip hop background he immersed himself in disco, funk, soul, house and techno, savouring the best each style had to offer.

Looking ahead to year two, Yuill teases, "As for the future, well, we’re sure to surprise... all will become apparent very soon but we must ask you to hold on and keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks. We’re developing some heavy gossip that will be dropping imminently."

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star (and owner of house label No.19) Jonny White.
Together they are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, relevant underground producers around today.

The album, which will go on general release on 25 April, has been long anticipate and previews have been creating a similar stir to the seminal Daft Punk album Homework. Expect something a bit special at Rendezvous as these guys are creating the new sound of electronica, and their appearance on Saturday night will be nothing short of ground breaking.

Rendezvous resident and promoter Ryan Harrower says, “I really like their sound at the moment. I’ve heard a few tracks from the forthcoming album and they’re excellent. “The Rendezvous Team are very excited to celebrate our First Birthday with Art Department.”

20: Double Hill - Purple Hills
21: Jonny Cade - A Sanguine Lamb (Original Mix)

PICK OF THE FLOOR FILLERS:

OMID 16B - Rain
ONE of the biggest progressive tunes around right now and one that is sure to be played right through the summer. A melodic journey awash with atmospherics - imagine being on the beach in Ibiza. Massive.

JAY WEST - Higher
FRESH from Miguel Migs’exceptional Salted label, this has to be one of the most uplifting house tracks ever. Music for your soul, it’ll take you higher and higher.

ART DEPARTMENT - Tell Me Why (Part 1)
THEY’LL be kicking off their tour Saturday night at Rendezvous, and this is nothing short of an exceptional cut. A dubby melodic electro-background and jaggling percussion hypnotically builds this into an
awesome groove. Dynamite.

DOUBLE HILL - Purple Hills
A BEAUTIFUL track. Seductive vocal as a lazy sax plays over the top and a jazz flute teases. Smoky. Warm. Summer house made for lazy lovers. Sexy.

COLIN SALES - Drop!
I JUST love to hear good home grown talent. This has a deep throbbing bass line and a teasing riff that melodically climbs in time with the beat as tech house percussion reins in. Freakin’ amazing on the drop!
