CLUB OF THE WEEK:
Compakt @ Cabaret Voltaire

DRESS CODE: It's a techno night - jeans and trainers

MUSIC: Techno and electro

DJs: Paul Thomas and Bruno FK with guests (Gary Beck headlining September)

Compakt, takes place the third Friday of the month, bi-monthly. Like many of the best underground club nights, it starts intimate and grows to the point that it's hard not to sit up and take notice. DJ / Promoter Paul Thomas has been busy bringing the crème de la crème of local talent to Cab Vol where they mix it up with the pioneers of the techno scene. His mission? Bring techno back to Edinburgh.

Par Grindvik made an auspicious appearance as their first guest head liner on 12th September 2008. Each subsequent DJing legend has proved why they are still the innovators of the scene, including captivating live performances from Hans Bouffmyhre, Robert Babicz, Phil Kieran and  most  recently - the mighty Joey Beltram. Who can forget the tune that changed it all (for the better),  Energy Flash. A tune that even my mates who have temporarily all but hung up their dancing trainers still carry on their i-pods in case of a techno emergency ...  and there's been a few.

It's not all about the headlining act though, as Thomas has pulled together Edinburgh's finest talents, Kapital's Brad Charters and Barry O'Connell, Jamie McKenzie, Ewan Smith and Chris Graham of Souloco and Musika and Pyz, Al Majik and new kid on the block DJ  Phase, all bring anything from minimal to dub-step and wonky electro.

The success of the night is in no little way down to the venue which  is perfect for Compakt. Cabaret Voltaire, is known for housing a number of quality club nights. Dark, cavernous and tomblike, it's ideal. Is the sort of club  in which playing dirty techno to a room packed full of hungry clubbers can only mean one thing... the two Bs  -  blinding and  banging!

Be warned  however, Cab  Vol is always heaving, with a massive queue all the way down Blair Street, but once inside, you'll be transported to a stone bunker made for techno and you'll love it.

The next Compakt night is in September, the second birthday. Thomas has ensured it will be a night worth remembering as one of Soma's young guns takes the lead, Gary Beck. If you fancy a preview of the night check out our first guest pod cast by Paul Thomas as he treats us to a thunderous techno set: www.edinburghnews.com/clubs

No.1 UK Chart Success:
Yolanda Be Cool – 'We Speak No Americano'

The biggest holiday tune since '7 am'... Yolanda Be Cool - 'We Speak No Americano' has just scooped the UK number 1 chart position, dancing swiftly past Eminem and Katy Perry.

It has been getting played in every club and resort all over Europe. Creating hesitant air play with some radio jocks - who didn't know whether they should support it or not (we backed it well in advance of it's general release, knowing all too well that it was going to be massive).

Public support for the record (aimed squarely at partying) tells me more than any official poll... people have been missing a little fun recently. Even your granny is thinking about playing at her weekly tea club with the girls... well, maybe not but you get the general idea.

We decided to ask Yolanda Be Cool what is it like to experience such a rise to stardom...

You've now achieved Number 1's in 4 countries (Denmark, Spain, Holland & now the U.K) with 'We No Speak Americano'. Did you ever expect the track to be so successful?
Not at all. We wanted to create a fun party track that could be played poolside in Sydney or early on in a club. We were more than happy when we discovered that some of our favourite DJ’s/Producers such as Round Table Knights, Solo and Mowgli we’re playing it.
Tell us about you're collaboration with D Cup, how you discovered Renato Carsone's original version, and how you produced it into a 2010 dance-floor hit.
Well DCup is an amazingly talented producer and he’s on the same label as us (Sweat It Out). He lives around the corner from us, so a collaboration was always going to happen. As for the original, ‘Little Bambalam (the amazing Female DJ’s on the same booking agency as us in Australia) were playing the original in their party sets and suggested we sample it. So we did! As for the re-jig that we did, it was completed in two sessions in the studio.
The single has obviously become one of the biggest tracks in Ibiza this summer, but where have you witnessed the best and biggest reaction from it when you've played it live?
Hmm… Well I guess it’s probably our biggest track that we play in our sets at the moment, so it goes pretty crazy everywhere. We played a gig at RUST in Copenhagen the other day and the crowd there were ABSOLUTELY crazy, so that was awesome. We definitely want to go back there.
What would you say to the people who brand your sound as 'Gimmicky House'? How would you describe yourselves as artists?
Well, we are open to new names to describe our sound, I haven’t heard that one! But we try to push what we call ‘Party Tech’. Other’s call it ‘Midget House’ or ‘Gypsy House’. We also like ‘Quirk House’, ‘Non-Serious Techno’, ‘Batty House’, ‘Non-Batty House’ ha!
It’s all good If it makes you dance and if you like it. I think Teki Latex said it best when he said that he likes hard stuff when it’s creative and groovy, and Minimalist stuff when it’s not boring nor serious… We kind of agree.
When can we expect the follow-up to 'We No Speak Americano'?
Well we had planned to have it (the follow-up) finished already but we have been in Europe for the last 6 weeks and DCup is now in the USA. Hopefully we can have a week together in August and we can get something done. We already have lots of ideas, so the answer to that would be soon!
Tell us about the shows you have planned for the summer.
We are back in Australia for ‘Splendour In The Grass’ which is a 3-day long festival. Then, we’re going to be doing some club shows and after that we are coming back to do gigs all over Europe between August 10th and September 20th. After that we shall head back to Australia for the Parklife festivals.
Finally, we'd like you to sum up how it feels to have a number 1 single here in the U.K.
It’s Surreal to say the least, but obviously a privilege to.

MUSIC: Electro, house and techno.

DJs: Blair and Ryan Harrower with guests - Matt Tolfrey (Cocoon).

LAUNCHED in March, Rendezvous showcases the best in local talent and features guest DJs making moves in the underground house scene.

Situated in the west end, 'The Lane' (formerly Berlin) runs parallel to Princess Street and not far from Lothian Road. You can't miss the dazzling flood lights illuminating the alley way or the crowd forming outside. Head through the main doors and down a steep flight of steps. Rendezvous is spread over three rooms, each providing a varied spectrum of house music, catering for most preferences.

Grant's Floorfillaz:

Fabrice Lig - Digital Forest (R&S Records)

The Legendary label R&S serve up a tasty slice of Techno, with chunky bass lines, tip tap percussion, squelching acid blips and epic strings. A rich and contemporary sound whilst still keeping it... old skool.

Midland - Play the game (Phonic)

Moody deep dub chords set the atmosphere for snappy break beats to slide in. Chord pads work the melody and ethereal vocal rises. "Leifmotif" is perfect progressive material if your into sonic soundscapes, deep and hypnotic. Echoed chord patterns, disembodied vocal textures drift in waves of sound. Impressive.

Deepgroove - Annihilate (Remute Remix) (Underwater Records)

Big room techno track given an extra punch courtesy of the fantastic Remute. This pounding peak time beast will head slice, mind mince, crackle and pop you on to the floor. Banging.

Elias Linn - Helersdorf (YTAC Remixes) (Bombshop)

Disjointed sounds phase, deep bass heavy chords set the pace and warm tech stabs climb. A skipping tech delight as air horns blast, making this hypnotic 4am festival tune... Gigantic.

Sander Bongertman - Rainy Days (Original Mix) (Coincidence)

Taken from the "Unbelievevable EP", a thumping kick drum, warbling chords and ticking snares are as pure as they come. Play this and everyone will go mental. DEE-TROIT!
