WHERE TO GET IN THE HOLIDAY MOOD THIS HOGMANAY:
"I'M totally up for it and looking forward to getting down with the Scottish crew this New Year's Eve. We are gonna go deep y'awl." So promises Edinburgh's Jason Robertson, better known these days as house producer/DJ Aqua Bassino, Famous for blending elements jazz, soul and blues into his deep house mixes, Robertson is set to return from a four year stay in Spain to headline The Newsroom NYE Party, on Leith Street, alongside Craig Smith, Harry Bennett and Ross Hutchison.
"This year is made all the more special because I'll be DJing with my closest friends. It's gonna be a party out of this world," says Robertson.
It'll be a fitting end to a busy year for the clubbing legend. "I've got a lot going on at the moment," he reveals. "I just put out a track with Chez Damier under my own name, Jason Robertson. The track is called Me Realizo, check it out.
"I don't want to let the cat out of the bag too much, but I've been working with vocalist Paul Randolph and focusing on my own projects while living in Spain. Now however, I'm back and they're ready to be unleashed, I'll be dropping some of those jams at the Hogmanay bash at The Newsroom."
The return of Aqua Bassino to his native city is just one of the highlights of Edinburgh's Hogmanay clubbing scene.
At The Voodoo Rooms there's a two for one welcome. As The Ballroom gets funked up classic stylee for Motherfunk, Shebang Rave Unit will take over The Speakeasy. With an all female cast of DJs intent on a ripping good party, this is a night surely not to be missed.
Not too far away you'll find City Nightclub, on Market Street. To mark the end of one year and the start of the next they will be dazzling crowds with a display of pyrotechnics, confetti showers and UV balloons along with a host of special guests, including breaks n' beatz stars Pendulum, who will be bringing in the New Year. They'll be joined by Kissy Sellout and the steadfast sounds of the Colours DJs.
On Holyrood Road you can catch the Bongo Club NYE Special, featuring a collective DJ pool selected from the Bongo's club roster. The percussive vibe will continue deep into the Cowgate as the cavernous Caves welcome the Departure Lounge Hogmanay Party. With artists such as the Rumba Caliente Afro Latin Orchestra, Norndog Brass Band and The Edinburgh Samba School joining Astro Boy, Jiminez, Mr Zimbabwe and DJ Wastepicker, expect a night of inspired tribal groove and a world themed vibe.
Elsewhere, there's an even more stripped down and minimal night at The Store (formerly The GRV) where Edinburgh's quality techno night, Substance, boasts one of the most eagerly anticipated festive line ups. Resident DJ Gavin Richardson is joined by two kings of the techno scene, Surgeon and Neil Landstrumm. Slabs of hefty techno guaranteed.
At Cabaret Voltaire, the Karnival NYE Party will feature no less than 25 DJs including the best in underground sounds from the likes of Dean Newton (Subliminal), Ryan Ellis (Karnival), Matt Edwards (Karnival), Darrell Harding (Pulse) and Andy Problems (Pulse).
Arguably Edinburgh's hardest working DJ, John Hutchison can be found headlining Moulin Rouge at Po Na Na this Hogmanay. Promoting sexy sounds to get down and dirty too, Hutchison promises a night of classics old and new to keep things hot inside, even if it's cold outside.

Edinburgh DJ Jamie Stenhouse, known simply as Stennie, is one of the residents at tonight’s Elements Christmas Party at The Lane. His warm up set for Koen Groneveld blew the roof off clubland earlier this year, his scratch techniques and groovy tech house soundtrack marking him as one to watch.

Secret Cinema sold more than 20 thousand ‘vinyl only’ copies in 1994. Now re-released, it is one of the best tracks ever made by one of the greatest techno pioneers to come out of Europe - Jeroen Verheij. His own Secret Cinema 2011 remix is an absolute gem. Play it and watch people flock to the floor. Also featuring is the twisted genius of Scotland’s very own Slam with their very special Paragraph remix. Essential purchase.

Neck-twisting, head-turning, eyeball-rolling, teeth-gnashing sonic madness from the exceptional Max Bett. A rippling techno cut, featuring fluorescent slugs... in my brain anyway.

This whomping slab of minimalist techno, has a beefy bass groove and a sizzling sub bass. Add the alarm ringing tech loop and unmistakeable evil laugh and you’ll be loving it. Genius.

The trippiest circus ever obviously, once you hear this. Deep rolling bass line create a powerful groove. Off tune riffs pan left and right as the beat drops. Building the intensity with a warping sound, the beat bangs back in with ferocious energy.Blinding.

GUEST DJ PODCAST: DEETRON
THIS week’s podcast comes courtesy of Deetron, one of the hottest DJ/producers around at the moment. Hailing from the mountain peaks of Berne, Switzerland, Sam Gaiser has operated under the Deetron moniker since the early 90s. Although his home surroundings differed from the mid-western American skylines of industrial Detroit, he has been on a mission to keep Chicago house and Detroit techno alive.
After completing a swathe of superb remixes for Danny Howell’s Dig Deeper, Art Of Vengeance, Free-range, EC Recordings, Rebirth and Will Saul’s Simple Records, Deetron is now focusing on his own album for an early 2011 release.
His unique style is a melodic, housey take on Detroit techno, inspired by anything from 70s soul and 80s New York disco, to the stark techno sound-scapes that earned Detroit its own style of electronic music. Gaiser says, “My DJ-ing has a strong technical element, and my aim is to go as close to remixing as possible with the means of turntables and CD players.”

CLUBLAND PODCAST: EDWIN OOSTERWAL
THIS week’s Podcast comes courtesy of Holland’s young gun Edwin Oosterwal, who has rocketed into the fray after his critically acclaimed solo, Debut And Dusty Room 4.
Oosterwal started DJing in Holland at university. He won over the toughest of floors with his deck skill. As a qualified engineer, he travelled the world, DJing in the cities where he was working. With a string of gigs at Europe’s leading clubs he is now one of the rising stars of the scene.

A 70’s disco drum rolls in as Max Essa’s funky synth and guitar drive the vocal to a new intensity. Undeniably one of the funkiest tunes around.
Perfectly timed claps and authentic disco beats build as orchestrated strings sweep through this track. But it’s the ‘love to love you’ styled groove and Hannah Mancini’s exceptional vocal that will give you goose-bumps.
Take an 808 kick and percussion, add cow bells, and you are already back in 1988. Then, as a bass line whomps in, a vintage piano chimes in, teasing until the break-down and it’s all good there after. Think Guy Called Gerald, 808 State, but hey it is called the warehouse mix.

CLUBBING at Christmas is all about having a rip-roaring good time, with all the trimmings. So, what better way to start off an evening than by immersing yourself in the ultimate festive atmosphere? Cue Edinburgh’s best pre-club Christmas venue, The Dome.
Now famed the world over for its lavish Christmas decorations, The Dome is an unmissable winter wonderland at this time of year. Iconic stone columns, decorated by twinkling fairy lights, set it apart from anything else at the east end of George Street and make it impossible to pass by.
Inside, the twin staircases and grand chandelier in the magnificent hall set the tone for what lies in store.
However, for all the theatricality on display, the main talking point of The Dome at Christmas is always the colossal centre piece of the inspired decoration - a dazzlingly beautiful Christmas tree, which dominates the main bar. It glows brightly in contrast to the warm surrounding ambience, looking every bit majestic as you’d expect.
Time now to spoil yourself. Champers anyone? Once in the mood to party, check out the wine list, it’s exceptionally good. The sauvignon blanc is an ideal tipple after the Champagne. The Tempranillo, crisp, rose, and refreshing. For serious red lovers, it has to be the Chateauneauf-du-Pape. That said, you could just as easily work your way through the house selection, as the bar is set high from the off.
If you want to set yourself up for the evening ahead, book a table in advance for one of The Dome’s two dinning experiences. The Grill Room is a lavish and 1930’s affair, the quieter Club Room more modern. Well presented, the food excels. Try the salmon, beef, or sirloin steak - unrivalled, it’s hung for 28 days and cooked to perfection.The Dome also boasts friendly, attentive waiting staff who easily make you feel like the most important person in the room. A perfect place then to spend the evening before a night in one of George Street’s clubs, and perfectly situated for the Opal Lounge, Po Na Na, and Lulu.

Hands down, I would have to say Scot Project wins. The guy is a living legend and has contributed massively to the scene over the years. He pretty much sculpted my musical preference, although German duo Kamui have been a massive inspiration for me as well.

It would have to be the time in August when I played at Club Sesh, at The Lane, It was on the eve of my 23rd birthday and was a great night. I even had a chance to warm up for Hard Dance legend Phil York, which topped it off.

The first few records I acquired were terribly embarrassing. As I got them off my mate, and didn’t buy them, I don’t need to embarrass myself by mentioning them. When I came to my senses, though, and got into tech-trance and started buying records, the first record I bought was Fred Baker and Greg Nash’s Eclipse EP.

There have been so many great tracks over the years. It’s a toss up between Marco V’s Indicator, Kamui‘s Electro Slut, Scot Project ‘s FM3 or Kidd Kaos’ I Am Digital. That’s the best I could do at narrowing them down.

JORIS VOORN PODCAST:
THIS week’s Clubland podcast comes courtesy of Joris Voorn, who will be playing at Musika Christmas party on 18 December.
Voorn is a Rotterdam-based techno DJ and producer who has recently worked with Scottish techno label Soma. He started DJing in 1997, releasing his acclaimed Lost Memories EP in 2003.
Soon after he performed in the legendary techno club Tresor, which resides in the basement of the old Wertheim department store in central Berlin.
Voorn is something of an enigma, tapping into the consciousness of the listener and blending techno, breaks and house.

WINTER’S here, there’s no doubt about that, so what’s the best way to thaw out and then keep warm after a chilly week? Simple, have a hot night out, and they don’t come hotter than sultry club night Va Va Voom, at Electric Circus, the perfect venue for any performance-driven club night as the wide-open bar allows views of the stage from virtually any location.
Normally, Electric Circus is an uber-modern karaoke club bathed in state-of-the-art, mood-enhancing neon lighting - a cyber-disco in fact, with cosy booths and individually themed karaoke rooms. Tomorrow night, however, promises much more with a dream-billing which sees no fewer than four burlesque artists headlining the Va Va Voom Christmas Party. Inspired by decades of exotica, Miss Hell’s Belle, bring a touch of Hollywood glamour to the occasion, while the evening also marks the return of freak show starlet Missy Macabre, who was the rapturous star of the Electric Circus birthday bash this summer.
Also on the bill is Vendetta Vain, one of the UK’s most established burlesque artists, who promises to bring a sense of humour to proceedings with her vibrant, larger than life eccentric characters. Highly skilled burlesque revivalist Cherry Loco completes the bill, mixing her own very special blend of raunchy sexuality with hi-camp comic absurdity, no doubt raising a few eyebrows along the way.
Meanwhile, in the DJ booth, Dee and Cassavetes will be firing up the festivities with their mash ups of jump blues, northern soul, R&B, Motown, neo-cabaret and rockabilly.
So, bask in an eclectic mix of burlesque, dance, theatre and live performance that’s sure to leave you hot under the collar - even if it’s still below zero outside.
