The Electric Frog September Weekender

Electric Frog is now in to it's third year, now established as Scotland's biggest inner city festival for electronic music fans. In fact, it's so big that the organizers have bumped the Frog up to it's fourth installment this year and the collaboration with SOMA Records (20 Years of Soma - 2011) has proven an excellent partnership.

EVERY year, the Fringe kicks off in a buzz of excitement as the city transforms into haven for 24 hour party people.

As you would expect there is something special to mark the occasion - superstar DJs Sasha and Guy Gerber will headline Musika at the Liquid Room on Saturday night.

With Smirnoff sponsoring and a newly refurbished garden area complete with bar it's the ideal venue to party.

Sasha is world famous, having brought acid house to the UK back in the 80's. More recently he has been championing new technologies to mix music (purists cover your ears… laptops).

He's clearly at the forefront and, for many who believe they're listening to a rare remix or unheard of track, it's not so. Sasha re-edits everything he plays before the gig. Playing live on decks routing everything through a plethora of effects boxes, sculpting the sound that's unmistakably 'Sasha'.

Interested yet? With a marathon three hour set billed for Saturday's event including support from Guy Gerber's Live show, you should be.

Gerber is the enigmatic Israeli born DJ whose Stoppage Time on Bedrock Records was an anthem which pulled in five figure sales - a virtually impossible task in an age when reality TV pop stars rule the chart.

What does he sound like? It’s probably easier to clarify him with three Es… euphoric, emotive and energy-driven.

Steve Rachmads remix is right on the money, a real treat for techno purists, the proper sound of Detroit... Thumping drum patterns and beautifully warm analogue sounds, cannae whack it. Tour de Force.

Most definitely DJ Sneak, his disco loops and jacking beats got me hooked on the Chicago house sound as soon as I heard it!

We've been fortunate to have had many jumping nights at Telefunken - Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak and Jamanta Crew were the classic nights that stand out.

What was the first track you ever bought?
The first 12" record I bought was "Curiosity Killed the Cat - Misfit" and I still like it.

Favourite all time track?
Being a fan of many musical genres it's impossible to choose but a memorable house track that sounds as fresh today as then is chez damier - can you feel it (Mk Dub).

A scientist will tell you Gravity is a natural occurrence, rhyming off a lengthy explanation to bore you to tears. However in club land terms when something heavy is dropped it carries quite different connotations.

A killer tune blasts through the speakers, resonating, you feel the pressure build. What brainiac's call 'cause and effect' results in a dance floor phenomenon, hands thrust in the air, cheering and feet pounding the floor.

Club promoter Desiree Dawson favours the science of clubbing, aptly entitling her techno night Gravity.

Dawson enthuses, "Last month Dave Angel's stellar performance had everyone going crazy, the shouts for one more tune was deafening. Saturdays gig's going to be equally massive, as this time we've got Chris Colburn headlining".

Colburn's relentless techno takes the listener on a deep hypnotic journey packed with punchy beats and grinding grooves. He was recently signed to Alan Fitzpatrick's 8 sided dice label, best known for cutting edge techno music.

So head to The Store this Saturday and witness Colburn smash Isaac Newton's laws of gravity, "What goes up must come down" or at least having a great time trying!

Pick Of The Club Nights: Ultragroove

ON Saturday night, Edinburgh’s longest running house night Ultragroove takes a bold step forward with a controversial proposal... they have NO big name DJs.

There’s not the slightest sniff of a New York chilli-dog or the hint of a swaggering London boy, instead, promoter Gareth Sommerville has chosen to go back to basics and build a night around local, home-grown talent.
Ultragroove’s back-room DJ duo Lel Palfrey and Carina Ramos headline the event. Known for their tag team-style, spinning funk, soul and disco, they’ll be changing their music policy a little as Ramos explains.

“We’re booked for the Main Room on Saturday night, so we’ll be introducing house with some cheeky edits. Four to the floor kind of gear played alongside our trademark disco-boogie stuff, for which we’re better known.”
The duo know exactly what they’re doing, having warmed up crowds for biggies such as DJ Sneak, Frank Trope, Honey Dijon, Mark Farina and Craig Smith.

Palfrey adds, “The past year has seen us rack up a number of regular spots in The Newsroom, City Cafe, Sygn, Bon Vivant, Wash Bar, Livingroom and The Outhouse.
“We love playing Ultragroove, the crowd are so open-minded and up for a party. The place is always buzzing and we’re both really looking forward to Saturday. It’ll be great to be back on the decks together.”
No reason not to support your local DJs then.

EDINBURGH Rocks is back with another massive party in Princes Street Gardens this Sunday.
On the bill for the seven hour bash are Dirty Vegas, Joey Negro, Arno, Studio Punks, Derek Martin, Gareth Sommerville, Mister Smith, Sioux City Boys Club and Donna Love.
Headline act Dirty Vegas are Grammy Award-winning British house trio Ben Harris, Paul Harris (no relation) and vocalist Steve Smith.

They are best known for their chart-breaking debut Days Go By. The hauntingly yet uplifting track achieved international success in 2001 sealing their future in an otherwise impossible US market.
Ahead of the gig, Ben Harris enthuses, “We have always loved playing in Scotland. The crowds are great and so into the music that we feed off them.

“We are buzzing about playing The Gardens... right below Edinburgh Castle, it’s going to be amazing.”
No stranger to Edinburgh either is co-headliner DJ Joey Negro (aka Dave Lee), the godfather of UK house and disco.

“It’s always nice to be playing during the summer, lets hope it’s sunny,” he laughs.
“I always enjoy visiting Edinburgh and will be armed with some great music to rock the crowd.”

(GP)So what's been happening in the world of Dave Angel?
(DA)Well, where do I start... I have been working on various projects, an album for a japanese label which is tech funk and another album which shows more a chilled and relaxed side of me.

I have also been doing various remixes recently - Cottage Industry for Danny Howells Dig Deeper label and Marco Baileys Rubberband just released on John Digweeds Bedrock label. I have a few more remixes to work on over the next few months but I'm also concentrating on my own productions.

I haven't been well for a while and was in hospital for 6 wks so im just getting back to being myself. It's good to be back in the studio and on the road Djing.

(GP)Your Djing in Edinburgh on Saturday night at the Gravity launch party are you looking forward to be back in the Burgh?
(DA)I feel like im going home, I have so many "good" friends up there, they are a family and Scotland on a whole has always been good to me, so im really looking forward to it.

(GP)Your style has evolved over the years from harder techno to a funkier sound, what would you say you were into at the moment?
(DA)I'm into all music, but the funkier side of music has always been by forte. Tech house is more the mature dave angel but hey we all have to grow up sometime!

(GP)Who's your biggest inspiration as an artist and DJ?
(DA)I will have to credit derrick may for this. The man is a genius!

(GP)What were you like as a kid and what drove you into being a DJ?
(DA)As A kid I was into music from a very young age. Whilst all my mates were out playing I was in the studio with my dad and his band playing the drums. Being a young man of the late 80's when the acid scene really hit, I was fortunate enough to already be a Dj on a radio station so the rest is history. I loved playing records and it just progressed to the big stage.

(GP)...And, producing music what made your mind up that this was what you wanted to do?

(DA)That is because its all I know how to do, I couldnt see myself doing a 9-5 job. Not that I disrespect anyone doing that - I put in more hours (he laughs). But with electronic music being the future, the drums sticks were put down and the 909 purchased.

(GP)Looking back did you ever think you were ever going to be where you are now - a premier league DJ and world class producer?

(DA)No one could have predicted what would happen, my mum kept telling me to get a real job and put away the records (he laughed). But I knew what I wanted and went with it.

(GP)How does it work when your in the studio, is there a roadmap to work to or is it a completely fluid process where you play with ideas?

(DA)I just start and see where it takes me, if I have a picture I go with it if not I experiment.

(GP)How would you describe the music you create?

(DA)A reflection of me and how I feel at that moment.

(GP)What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into DJing or making music?

(DA)If you love it, keep pushing on and believe in yourself, before you know it 5yrs will go by and you will hear your progress.

(GP)Do you have a favourite piece of studio equipment?

(DA)Yeah my new macbook pro and a new chair (he laughs)

(GP)Are you a day person or a night owl?

(DA)Night owl - but I have to get up to get the kids from school.

(GP)Jet setting around the world seems exciting - what's it like really?

(DA)Hard work and not as glam as people think, no food , no sleep and standing in a lot of lines waiting for security checks

(GP)When on the road do you sleep or work or just chill?

(DA)All of it!

(GP)What's a normal day in the life for you?

(DA)Get up check emails, have some breakfast or brunch, get kids come back fire up the studio and im there till dinner, if arsenal is playing I will watch them if not im back in the studio till 3ish then wind down with a game if fifa then bed and start all over the next day - groundhog day man

(GP)There seems to be a revival of the original house/techno, do you think it has come full circle?

(DA)Music always comes full circle.

(GP)What are your favourite labels of the moment?

(DA)I wouldnt say labels, my favourite artist is Eric Prydz - his production is supreme.

(GP)Who are the new producers coming through who you think are worth checking out?

(DA)James Hannah he will be worth watching out for.

(GP)What's your top tune of the moment?

(DA)I'd have to say my remix of Marco Baileys track rubberband which is rising up the beatport charts!

(GP)What was the first record you bought?

(DA)It was on trojan records a reggae tune I cant remeber the name.

(GP)What's your favourite tune of all time?

(DA)Filles de Killimanjaro by miles davis its the oldest piece of music I know my mum used to use it as a lullaby to get me to sleep and i think its a great piece of music by a legend

(GP)So what's the plan for the summer, DJing or family life or a bit of both?

(DA)Both!

EASTER WEEKEND CLUB PICKS:
Easter weekend is a time to rejoice and for some clubbing is a perfect way to do it. Though you are more a kin to be dancing in a heaving sweat box praising the DJ than any other form of alter... so we've put together a non-stop weekend party schedule for devout clubbers intend on a weekend worship of electronica.

FRIDAY:
Our first stop of the weekend is Club 10-86 at Cabaret Voltaire featuring exceptional guest DJs - Vakama, Sven Weismann and Secret Cinema. Secret Cinema (Jeroen Verheij) is one of the European pioneers of techno music hailing from Rotterdam. In 1994 his classic "Timeless Attitude" (just recently reissued with Slam and Joris Voorn remixes) sold more vinyl copies than any other electronic artist at the time, leading to one of the most spine tingling cuts and slamming sounds which has become truly "Timeless".

SATURDAY:
It's Saturday morning and your still going strong at the after party but it's getting light and you know it's still not time to throw the towel in. So where now?... Okay this is a little controversial but we're off to Glasgow and the two day festival called The Electric Frog. We like this idea as you can party during the day and catch the last train home to finish Saturday night in the Burgh, brilliant!

Grant Paterson caught up with Orde Meikle (one half of Slam and part owner of Soma Records) for a chat about all things Slam and Electric Frog...

How did the collaboration with the Electric Frog come about?

Orde Meikle [OM]: Our manager Dave who books a lot of stuff for Pressure and the Slam Tent is friendly with the guys who promoted the Electric Frog last year - they had a successful event and Dave had helped them get Felix da Housecat to play. This time they wanted to step it up a notch and so they asked us to get involved in the overall event, taking it from one day to two - with some afterparties at the Academy, Sub Club and The Arches to boot.

What's got you excited about doing a festival on your home turf?

OM: A lot of people are going to T in the Park and RockNess this summer but Glasgow is still one of the best places to put on a party and to play, so we are excited.

The line-up looks pretty tasty - is there any one DJ you fancy seeing for yourselves?

OM: We miss the Saturday as we are playing Fabric in London but we are there for the entire Sunday. Ben Klock is on before us and we will be down early for his set for sure.

When you were starting out, could you ever have imagined yourselves as you are now, having this career and a record label [Soma]?

OM: We had a good imagination but not one that stretched 20 years into the future. It's good we have been able to continure to evolve and also create, as well as helping others to get into the music world through the Soma label and the clubs.

Who's inspired you to become a DJ and how did you get into producing your own tracks?

OM: The DJs that we admired back in the day were Andrew Weatherall in this country, Alfredo in Ibiza and probably Larry Levan and Ron Hardy in America. We knew early on that we had to make music firstly to play and also as a calling card to other countries - letting folk know what Slam and Glasgow was all about - and once we started we never looked back.

You're very busy travelling and producing... what's a day in the life for Orde and Stuart?

OM: We get up early and get stuck in emailing, listening to music and making tracks in between. Weekends are spent traveling with the odd one off at home with our families.

Jetting all over the world seems glamorous - a dream job in fact, what's it really like?

OM: Interesting and fun but it also takes you away from loved ones a bit too regularly on occasion.

What's at the top of your digital record boxes at the moment?

OM: The crate is a very liquid thing at the moment - tunes come and go so quickly. We have some excellent remixes commissioned for Soma 20 by Gary Beck, Loco Dice, Joris Voorn, Carl Craig and many more - a lot of those are on the top.

We've heard you play the best deepest house to darkest techno sometimes throwing in the odd classic. What's your approach to DJing?

OM: Play what you feel and what you think can move the audience

What do you think has happened to the scene in the past few years and what's different or better now?

OM: So many people are making tracks and DJing and putting on parties - it's hard for the crowd to get excited unless something is really special or out of the ordinary. That is a double-edged sword - good in many ways but it can also be detrimental.

With no sign of you letting up, what's in store for Slam, Soma and Paragraph?

OM: It's Soma's 20th birthday year and we have some parties planned later this year with a massive compilation project of remixes and back catalogue - anyone who is anyone in dance music is involved and it's a massive undertaking for the label. We will be remixing some of the other artists and putting a mix of our favourite remixes out for the birthday too!

Okay, this is a pretty difficult call... we have more techno in the Cab Vol with Pulse... minimal tech in The Store, jazzed up funky tribal goings on at Departure Lounge in The Caves, or the amazing Alex Metric in Liquid Room (our pick is a bit of breakz after all that techno).

Metric has remixed artists as varied as Depeche Mode, La Roux, NERD, Phoenix and Bloc Party as well as working with breakz magicial Alex Freeland. Voted 'Best Breakthrough Producer' in 2008 at Breakspoil he's gone from strength to strength winning countless 'The Best Of' titles since!

The last and final day of our full on weekender has to be spent at our old favourite:- BURGER QUEEN - Reunion party...Huggy and his team of house DJs will be igniting easter Sunday with the best loved house and disco, featuring sets from Gareth Sommerville, Davy Brown, Nasty P, Gino and Babes... and the man who has recently brought house music back to the City Cafe... Lel Palfrey.

Grant Paterson spoke to Huggy earlier this week about all things Burger Queen in the run up to Sundays nostalgic return to Edinburgh's best loved house night...

What's happening in the world of 'Huggy' these days?
I'm very busy as always in my personal and business life, I'm just about to become a father my wife is due in the next 6 weeks which is very exciting. At work it's all go 24-7 looking after www.xileclothing.com, in the studio and DJing so I don't have anything to complain about.

What prompted the Burger Queen reunion?
I can't actually take the credit for this one it's all down too Gareth Somerville's persistency that we've brought back Burger Queen. A couple of times last year Gareth asked me if I'd consider it, at first I was really hesitant as I'm very much a future thinking DJ but the more it was talked about the more interest was raised. I'm sure that we'll see a lot more clubs piggy back on the idea.

How does it feel to be back doing Burger Queen again?
Listening to my old records was very nostalgic it brought back some amazing memories. Running the night again has also re-united a lot of old friends our Xmas Party last year blew me away with Cabaret Voltaire bursting at the seems and the feedback was so good that we decided that we should limited it to just 2 events a year.

What's your fondest memory / most memorable night - from all the Burger Queen's?
There's far too many to say most were a complete blur but we had an amazing night when Burger Queen went to Glasgow. We bussed around 250 clubbers through to the Tunnel. For years everyone went on about the atmosphere in Glasgow being so good so we all made a huge effort and totally blew the Tunnel away that night Glasgow never knew what hit them.

Who was your favourite guest from BQ?
Burger Queen was never about guests it was all about the clubbers I can count on both hands all the guests we had in its 6 years... but S-Xpress's Mark Moore was probably one of the best guests we had.

Who would you say has inspired you as a dj and producer?
Everyone and anything I just played what got me excited from all genres of music, back then you didn't really get underground dance music on TV or radio you could only hear it at the right clubs. And today still my inspiration comes from everywhere.

Recently we've heard your music selection change quite a bit from the house days, will you be playing your new more progressive - techier edge or the funky fried house rammed with classic's?
I've always flirted with different sounds musical boredom and repetition is one of the reasons we don't have as many exiting clubs today. At the re-union parties you'll hear everything from House to Techno to Acid and of course some well known classics. This weekend we have Soul Biscuits in the Speakeasy so you'll get classic 90's Hip Hop too which I've very excited about too.

What's your all time favourite floor filler from Burger Queen?
I guess it has to be either John Paul Young's 'Love is in The Air' or T-Empo 'Saturday Night' they both bring any Burger Queen regular to tears.

What's different now, than back in the days of Burger Queen?
I was very worried that the atmosphere might not be the same but I was speechless it was one of the best nights in years. I guess great music will always bring the best out of people.

Your an old school DJ (apologies for the 'old'), are you still a vinyl man or CDJs or have you embraced new technologies?
Technology all the way I've been using midi controllers and laptops alongside cd's and turntables for a few years now and I am the first to sing its praises. I believe the more you can offer the clubber the better the DJ you are with Technology today I can do so much more I can remix on the spot I can loop vocals / drums / piano's and efx it just adds so much more atmosphere. But purists don't worry for the re-union parties it's vinyl all the way

What's your favourite gadget at the moment?
Native Instruments Traktor and the X1 and all it's add has revolutionised today's DJs .

Your a producer as well as a DJ, what's been happening?
It's been pretty full on with loads of studio work I think it's the only way to get recognised today and I've quite a few things out and lined up for the summer, I've always got a few tracks on the go

So, what's the plan after the reunion, will you be in Ibiza, or some far flung places in the world?
With my imminent arrival I haven't been taking that many bookings but there will be some very exciting events later in the year.

THE best of Miami’s nightlife comes to Edinburgh on Saturday as part of the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project, and City Nightclub is the place to be.

This unique event is the second stop of the longawaited Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project - Miami Tour. Clubbers will be treated to a live performance from one of the hottest DJs of the Miami scene, Damaged Goods, who will be jetting in especially for the one off show.

A true pioneer of the dance music scene, Damaged Goods has gained a reputation as one of the premier DJs in Miami, with his residency at infamous Miami nightclub Mansion, as well as regularly playing the Miami Winter Music Conference.

Party goers can expect a mash up of dance floor fillers spanning the cream of electro, house, hip-hop, dub step and trance to create a night to remember. Clubbers will also be able to sample an authentic Miami experience with palm trees overhead in the main room, Latino dancers and carnival entertainment. It’ll be just like Miami Vice... without the vice.

INTERVIEW: HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR

What's been happening in the world of Hercules and Love affair?

The new album, Blue Songs, has been released on Moshi Moshi in the UK and Europe, which is very exciting. A large tour of Europe is currently happening to support the release.

So what was the trigger to form the collective?
Andy enivisioned a cast of various collaborators to help him realize his songs. The critical success of the first album made it necessary to form a touring band to support the work. For this second album nearly all of the vocal contributors are available to tour.

How did you come up with the name?

Andy derived the name from his fascination with a particular Greek myth about Hercules longing for the love of his partner who was lost on a foreign island. Hercules refused to leave the island until his 'love affair' was found.

Andy's been Djing for years in the vibrant US club scene, was Hercules the accumulation of everything he experienced as a Dj or were there other factors which influenced him in triggering the collective?

It is my understanding that Andy's interest in music began in his very early childhood when he received regular piano lessons. He has also been collecting obscure recordings from bands like Earache that he wouldn't normally play out at a gig.

He studied composition in college and so his work is a reflection of a broader musical landscape that includes, but is not limited to, djing and dance culture.

When you formed the group was it a case of everything falling into place, with the right people at the right time?

Yes, the process was very organic.

Have you known each other for a while?

I've known Andy for almost 3 years and Mark has known him about the same amount of time. He met Daniella before Hercules was fully realized in Berlin and has known Kim Ann for close to a decade. They, of course, have the most intimate and long-standing relationship.

How does the collective operate... does everyone input their own ideas or is there a clear drive to keep things in some kind of central direction?

Andy is the central creative force. He writes the song lyrics and handles a very large portion of all production. The contribution of each collaborator varies depending on the nature of the work or song. He is up for suggestions if it works best for the song so at times it can be flexible.

If someone has been hiding in a cave for the last four years and had never heard of you... how would you describe what your music sounds like and what you are all about?

Forward-thinking reflections on music rooted in the past few decades (not just dance music) that is from and authentic place.

When in the studio, do you have a road map or is it a completely fluid process?

It depends on the day and work in question. Sometimes the track is already worked out and Andy write's lyrics to it. Other times he will sit you down at the piano and began to work out a melody or chord progression from scratch.

What's your favourite Hercules and Love Affair track and why?

That's a tough one because I honestly think they all are interesting and different. But if I had to go out on a limb I would choose 'Easy'. It's so lush and evocative. 'Answers Come In Dreams' is a close second. I find the lyrics extremely poignant and beautiful.

Electronic music has undergone somewhat of a revival and is one of the few true outlets for the freedom of expression... How do you feel about mainstream music and the domination of the major labels?

Oftentimes, this music is created in a formulaic way that does not embrace the warmth of older disco, house or techno. I would not compare a large majority of this dance music with the rooted, emotional work that you can still find in the more underground scene.

Who are your favourite artists / producers of the moment?

Personally, I think Azari & III have been releasing consistently strong singles and remixes. I think they have a bright future. Andy is very supportive of Kink and In Flagranti but I'm sure there are other artists that capture his attention, too.

What's been the biggest / best gig for you so far?

Wow, there have been quite a few. I would say that some cities that the new lineup has had the pleasure of playing on multiple occasions and have had consistently good shows and responsive audiences include Vienna, London, Milan, etc. A surprisingly good show happened in Seattle last year. The energy was through the roof!

What was the first record you bought (no matter how embarrassing)?

The first record I purchased was Dajae's "U Got Me Up" remix package.

Have you been to Scotland before, what have you heard about the Death Disco crowd?
What can we expect to hear from you when you play the fabulous Death Disco in the Arches? Banging jams from the first and second album and a few surprising cover songs.

Are you going to stay for a few days after the gig and check out Scotland?

Unfortunately, we must head out after the show.

So what have you got planned for the future? More touring.

We're excited about the summer festival season!

Oh god let me think... ha! It was Jackie Wilson’s Reet Petite in 1986. Classic tune, classic video.

Easy, Daft Punk’s Rollin & Scratching. It is a timeless tune that, even today, sounds new. It is always guaranteed to blow up any dance floor.

TOMORROW sees Edinburgh club night Heavy Gossip celebrate its first birthday with the arrival of a special guest - Cottam. He’ll be joining Edinburgh house legend Craig Smith on the decks. An excited Nick Yuill, who runs the popular club night, says, "We’re delighted to be hitting our first birthday. It’s been a very quick year and a lot of fun. I’m really pleased with how the night has grown and obviously the artists we have involved but our crowd is truly where it’s at. They’re the best and ensure that the vibe remains strong."

Cottam may have shot on to the house scene in 2009, but his DJing career dates back to the mid 90s. If ever proof were needed that DJs are like a good bottle of wine - they get better with age - then look no further than Cottam. Originally from a hip hop background he immersed himself in disco, funk, soul, house and techno, savouring the best each style had to offer.

Looking ahead to year two, Yuill teases, "As for the future, well, we’re sure to surprise... all will become apparent very soon but we must ask you to hold on and keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks. We’re developing some heavy gossip that will be dropping imminently."

Art Department @Rendezvous

THIS Saturday sees Edinburgh club night Rendezvous celebrate its first birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than with the album launch of The Drawing Board, the latest release from house maestros Art Department.

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star (and owner of house label No.19) Jonny White.
Together they are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, relevant underground producers around today.

The album, which will go on general release on 25 April, has been long anticipate and previews have been creating a similar stir to the seminal Daft Punk album Homework. Expect something a bit special at Rendezvous as these guys are creating the new sound of electronica, and their appearance on Saturday night will be nothing short of ground breaking.

Rendezvous resident and promoter Ryan Harrower says, “I really like their sound at the moment. I’ve heard a few tracks from the forthcoming album and they’re excellent. “The Rendezvous Team are very excited to celebrate our First Birthday with Art Department.”

QUENUM INTERVIEW

Phillippe Quenum, is a techno DJ and producer living in Switzerland. Whilst living in London he founded Access 58 with Paulo Nascimento, Cadenza with Luciano and Num records in Geneva. He's made more records than you could shake a stick at - “Orange Mistake” being one of the biggest techno tracks in last ten years.

We charted his recent release Boomerang for being a quality cut with a message: a poignant statement about file sharing... you really should support the artists you listen to, shouldn't you.

I caught up with Philippe to ask him a few questions and find out how he ticks, as it turns out he's a nice fella with a cool out look on life...

What's been happening in the life of Philippe Quenum then?
I'm still in the studio, I’ve been working a lot more on music production than on gigs and also prioritizing my time with my family, you have to have a balance.

What has been your highlight of the year so far?
A party I played with my buddies here in Geneva, that we organized together with Daschund, Agnes, Ripperton and Chaton. A good night, lots of fun, just what everyone needed.

What's been the most banging Scottish gig/venue to date?
The night I played for Soma at Pressure. I love Soma, the whole team is brilliant and the vibe at their club nights is always amazing. Big respect to Soma!

How did you find the crowd?
They participate so much, give you a lot of feedback, they get completely involved emotionally and that shows me they’re interested in the music I’m playing... they pay attention.

Who is your DJ who inspiration?
There have been so many…oh….big respect for François K, when I’m New York I always try to go see him at Deep Space... his choice of music is always just amazing. Ricardo Villalobos is one of the good DJs right now, I’m always impressed too when I see him play, always happy, always enthusiastic. I started as a breakdancer in the 1980s, the first live set I saw was Herbie Hancok (with computer) with DJ DST at the Roxy in New York and that blew my mind. That’s when I knew I wanted to leave the dancefloor and get up there, behind the decks.

Where does your musical inspiration come from?
It comes from my family, my dad and my mom. She’s from the Caribbean and my dad from Africa (Benin). I grew up with music all day long, we listened to Jazz, Blues, French songs, Caribbean stuff, African –everything. And everyday. I was lucky to live in West Africa for a few years, even though I was born in France, and that was the best musical experience.

When in the studio do you have a roadmap to work to or is it a completely fluid process?
It’s everyday something different, I let myself go, some days it works and some days it doesn’t. I have no plan.

How would you describe the music you create?
That is one very hard question. Music is music.

Are you still an analogue man or are you all digital now?
I use both.

What's your favourite piece of kit?
The Korg PolySix keyboard I bought about fifteen years ago in London.

There seems to be a revival of the original house/techno sound, do you think house music has come full circle?
I think it never really left, it’s just that people wanted to experiment with different sounds, try new things. So there’s been lots of different experiments, but people have realized that house music has a warmer touch.

What do you think is happening with music these days?
A lot is happening with music, but whatever happens good or bad we have to go with it because you can’t stop evolution. It’s always been that way. There’s been a lot of changes with regards to distribution, to the business, all the digital stuff. I started way back when vinyl was star and I never stopped playing vinyl. But there’s also good things in these changes.

What do you think is different these days in comparison to when you started out?
About fifteen years ago I found that each DJ I listened to gave me something different, each one had their originality. People were less blasé. There was an explosion of undeground parties, where we discovered incredible stuff. And mostly, there was human contact when you went to buy your records in the shop. You met people from all over the world who were into music, like yourself. I’ve made many friends and great contacts there. Not just downloading music by yourself at home.

Your recent release Boomerang EP is a solid slice of techno, two excellent cuts with the exceptionally clever Just Take It on the flipside, featuring Detroit Grand Pubahs. Was it one of those topics you felt just needed to be pointed out?
Yes, I think so. It’s something I had in my heart and that I wanted to share. A lot of people talk about it, so I thought why not. I often give my music for free, I’m not against that, but I think people can pay a buck to buy a song. We work hard to do this, we also need a minimum in return.

What are your favourite labels of the moment?
Perspectiv / Musique Risquée / Bass Culture …and my label, Clapper

Who are the new producers coming through who you think are worth checking out?
Right now, Jin Choi. I love the music he makes, I find it has a lot of emotion. And he’s a cool guy, very low profile.

What's your top tune of the moment?
Crooks & Lovers on the label Mount Kimbie.

What was the first record you bought (no matter how embarrassing)?
The first I remember is an LP by U-Roy, With Words of Wisdom. I also bought some Stevie Wonder around the same time.

What's your favourite tune of all time?
Fely Kuti, Zombie.

For Djing... Do you use vinyl or CDJs or another technology?
Mostly vinlys but also CDs. That way I can play my friends’s stuff that hasn’t come out yet and try my new stuff too.

So when are you coming back to play Scotland?
I hope soon.

What have you got planned in the near future?
I’m working on a remix for Systematic Recordings, and I’m working on the next Clapper EP. Also an EP for Thema Records in New York. And other tracks, but I’m not yet sure which labels I will choose.
